The Plontch Wooden Synagogue
In 1923, the Institute of Polish Architecture
began an inventory of synagogues, under the direction of Szymon Zajczyk.
Zajczyk took thousands of photographs of Polish Judaica and synagogues
(including the wooden synagogue in Plontch), and prepared detailed
descriptions. His research team consisted of architects from the Institute of
Polish Architecture of the Polytechnic of Warsaw who made hundreds of
measurements of synagogues. Copies were made of the polychrome (multi-colored)
decorations. These efforts were also mentioned in the
Plontch Yizkor Book article which was published in
Sefer Stashev.
Although much of the information gathered was
destroyed in the Holocaust, some material was saved and appears in the book
'Wooden Synagogues' by Maria and Kazimierz Piechotka (published in Warsaw,
Arkady Publishers, 1959).
Szymon Zajczyk photographed the Synagogue in
approximately 1936. His photographs and architectural plans are in the book.
I have heard from a Plontch Survivor that during the
Holocaust, the synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis and used as firewood.
